Perfect Storm

Some of you may know that we are on the brink of a political "Perfect Storm".

Politics for me is like hockey. I only really watch when its the playoffs and its like game 7. So now is the time when I get really interested in politics. Some you may read this and instantly tune this post out. BUT DON'T. This is where it gets good.

I'll try to keep it brief, but I want to get everyone as excited about this as I am.

As you may well know, the nomination race between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton is very tight. As I understand it, the democratic party nominates their presidential candidate through a primary election process, where the individual who wins the most delegates at the end of the primary election receives the democratic nomination. Each state has a certain number of delegates, and depending on voter response, delegates are awarded accordingly.

To further complicate the issue, there are about 800 "super delegates" who are not obligated to vote based on the results of any states primaries, but instead can choose to support whichever candidate they want based on the following:

1. Super delegates should support the candidate they believe represents the best chance of winning the general election.
2. Super delegates should act in the best interest of the democratic party.

What potentially could happen is that neither candidate, Clinton or Obama, could enter the Democratice National Convention with enough delegates to represent a majority, at which time the super delegates essentially would choose the nominee.

If this happens, it would be the first time since 1952 that there has been a "brokered convention". (Adlai Stevenson received the nomination through a brokered convention, and oddly enough, my college at UCSC was called Stevenson College, named after the great Adlai Stevenson).

So I will wait in anticipation of this "perfect storm" of politics, because occasions such as these don't happen often.
