Roller Derby

I have a new favorite sport. Roller Derby.

Last night I went to the Derby Bout between the Santa Cruz Roller Girl All Stars and the Inland Empire Derby Divas at the Santa Cruz Civic Center.

It was quite the experience. Sell out crowd. Lex from Survivor was the commentator.

Roller Derby as a sport is quite interesting. I'll spare you the details here, but check out the rules on Wikipedia.

I had kind of put Roller Derby in that same category as professional wrestling, but it is actually a somewhat legitimate sport. Granted the girls come up with cheesy wrestler names like "Roxy Scarmichael", but they take this pretty seriously. In the first half alone, there were two all out brawls with plenty of punching and hair pulling. There were some pretty serious body checks and girls flying all over the track. Several injuries and stoppages to clean up blood on the track were pretty common.

Not to mention the score was pretty close the entire time. The Santa Cruz Roller Girls pulled managed to pull off the victory. The whole crown went nuts.

Count me in as a new fan of the Santa Cruz Roller Girls.
